Many people ask ‘What is a PQQ document?’ A PQQ is the acronym of Pre-Qualification Questionnaire, often the first stage in a procurement process for goods and services. PQQs are designed to draw out necessary information about your organisation, including:
- company name,
- contact details,
- trading history,
- credentials and certifications
- SHEQ arrangements
- Equality & Diversity
- Social/added value arrangements
- And many more!
It is designed to filter out organisations who would not be suitable to deliver the contract you are bidding for. It is also your first opportunity to showcase why your company is best placed to be awarded the contract.
PQQs reduce the administrative burden on the organisation who has put the contract out to tender as it ultimately limits the amount of companies who will be able to complete a tender return. Often only 3-8 bidders will be successfully invited to tender (the next and often final stage of the procurement process), and potentially dozens of companies will be vying for one of those places at the PQQ stage.
Pre-Qualification Questionnaires used to be seen as a simple ‘box ticking’ exercise or application form, but as the tendering arena has become more and more competitive it has become all the more important to dedicate time and energy to ensure your PQQ return is of the highest possible quality.
PQQs can hugely vary in size, scope and severity, but efforts have been made in recent years to standardise this stage. All questionnaires for procurement exercises undertaken on the NEPO Portal are the same, for example, regardless of if it’s for Northumberland County Council or Redcar and Cleveland Council. Another example would be PAS91, which is a standardised Publicly Available Specification facilitated by BSI Standards Limited. This has been produced to streamline the qualification process and reduce costs for tendering for contracts namely in the construction industry.

We all know the phrase
“you are the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with”
well this year along with working our backsides off day and night we have really put this in to action investing more time and effort with our non exec and actively sourcing mentoring from those that have been there and done it. This doesn’t mean trying to make friends with every big wig in town. Its as simple as reading books by some of the most successful people in history, watching youtube videos, listening to podcasts, attending conferences and just asking. We have had mentoring sessions with people well out of our league through a bit of flattery and an offer of lunch- “Hi ____, I really admire _____ and the way you _____. It would be great to get your view on our marketing/business/growth plan etc.is there a day i could take you for lunch to get your opinion on our plans?”
It really does work. This year personal development has been off the scale and we have plans to push it even further in 2018.

Luck is a strange thing. A thing which I believe doesn’t really exist. However despite its non existence I plan on telling you how to be lucky… please bare with me it will all make sense soon.
I am sure we have all read or hear on a daily basis examples of luck or someone being described as lucky. But when you think about it, genuine occurrences of luck are about as rare as a blue moon. Most cases considered to be luck are a result of a series of events put together with the aim of achieving an outcome, e.g. a lucky goal (well I assume that they have been trying very hard to make this happen for a prolonged period).
My Mother thinks she is really lucky. She is always winning raffles! It is her belief that she is lucky that makes her buy tickets whenever she sees an opportunity… you see were this is going? Her persistence and belief in her own luck creates the luck. She takes a chance more often than most and it pays off probably as regularly as it would for anyone else with her belief and persistence.
But how and why does this matter? the truth is we create our own luck in all aspects of our life and in business too. So if you take more chances, grab more opportunities, work a little harder at something you can have more ‘luck’ too (which we have established doesn’t really exist). This could be taking a chance and asking a potential client to lunch, going to more networking events and making sure you talk to the most people, ask if you can quote for work, be brave, maybe even buy a raffle ticket*
